ANHEUSER-BUSCH
ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF IDAHO FALLS MALT PLANT
ST. LOUIS, December 19, 2001 - As a sign of the company's commitment
to the local community and in recognition of Idaho and intermountain
region growers' proven record of providing high-quality malting barley,
Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. today announced the beginning of a
major expansion at the company's Idaho Falls malt plant. The expansion
project will nearly double the size of the plant and is scheduled
for completion sometime in 2004.
"The world's finest beers are made with the highest-quality ingredients,
and this expansion further enhances the consistent supply of high-quality
malt that we provide to our beer company," said Donald W. Kloth,
chairman of the board and CEO of Busch Agricultural Resources, Inc.,
the company's agricultural subsidiary.
The Idaho Falls malt plant was completed in 1991 and is considered
one of the most efficient in the world. Currently producing more than
8 million bushels of malt each year, malt production is expected to
increase to nearly 16 million bushels by 2004.
Using a carefully controlled malting process, Anheuser-Busch is one
of the few brewers in the world that continues the time-honored tradition
of malting much of its own barley. The barley malt is a key ingredient
in brewing and is considered the "soul" of all great beers.
Kloth added that the expansion in Idaho Falls should result in greater
efficiencies in BARI's overall malting operations and in significant
transportation savings.
Company officials say the plant will continue operations during the
expansion project.
